When you want to lose weight, but have no idea where to start

January 29, 2014

I get asked the question a lot, what did you do to lose weight? That question is usually followed by the comment; "I want to lose weight, but I have no idea what to do or how to get started". Losing weight is so simple, unbelievably simple. However, even though it is simple, it is not easy. To lose weight all you need to do is eat clean, exercise, and stay motivated. It sounds simple, right? Repeat those steps everyday and you will be able to lose weight.

I sincerely believe the biggest obstacle people struggle with is staying motivated. Unfortunately motivation is not something you can buy. There is no magic motivation pill you can pop once a day, nor a surgical procedure you can go under for and be done with it. Motivation comes deep within yourself and it is something that you have to push yourself with everyday on your journey.

When I decided that I had to lose weight, It was a Tuesday afternoon in September of 2008. I was 19 years old. I was at the doctor's office and a nurse had just weighed me and took my blood pressure as they always do when a patient comes from an appointment. I felt numb. I was 19 years old and weighed 276 pounds. I had gained 116 pounds in two years. Throughout high school, especially my senior year, I stayed very muscular and fit. However, I graduated early, and from January 2007 to September 2008, life to me meant nothing but partying, binging, fast food, and skipping the gym. I was at the doctor that September day to talk to my MD about depression. I had been battling it off and on. I would shower with the lights off because I could not stand to see myself naked. I would cry in the dressing rooms of any stores I was in because clothes never fit me correctly. I started to never see my friends because I hated going out with them. I was the fattest and ugliest of the group, so why even bother to go out? I just wanted to stay home and feel sorry for myself. And I wanted food to comfort me.

When my doctor came in the room to talk to me, I told her what I was going through. We talked for about half an hour and she thought I should see a Psychologist. She was just a small town medical Doctor and she concluded that my problems were better fit for a Psychologist to evaluate. When I left, I sat in my car and replayed the conversation that just ensued and I thought really hard about what I told her. My problems sounded different when I said them aloud. For the first time, I told someone why I was feeling depressed. It was then sitting in my car, that I decided I had to lose weight. I had to change my life. I was 19 years old and I should be in the best shape of my life - having the best time of my life. My depression was not due to a neurological chemical imbalance to where I would need medication, it was because I loathed myself so much.

When I arrived home from the doctor, I started my research. That is how I initially got started. I did a lot of research to make myself learn. I could not afford a fancy weight loss program or a trainer to do all of the work for me and I just follow their lead. I knew that I wanted to learn so my change could be permanent. I went online and looked up YouTube videos for exercise and healthy eating, I would look up clean eating recipes, the benefits of lean proteins, vegetables, fiber, and carbohydrates - and examples of each of those food groups. I learned the difference between a simple and complex carbohydrate as well as monounsatured and trans fats. I would read and print pictures and instructions on different weight lifting exercises and the various types of cardio such as endurance and high intensity interval training. I worked for what I wanted. If I wanted to lose weight, I needed to learn how to do it correctly. I ordered books and magazines on nutrition and fitness. There are also a plethora of weight loss blogs and websites online filled with writers who are willing to help people, such as myself! If you want to lose weight but have no idea where to start, feed your brain with information.

After I had an idea on what to eat, I consciously made myself make better choices. That evening after I read on nutrition and fitness, I made a clean dinner. My dinner consisted of a lean protein, vegetables, and a complex carbohydrate. I made progress. I was learning, and my first step to a clean meal was successful. Next, I sat down to write out and schedule my days so I could always ensure I have a designated time to exercise. Then I woke up the next morning and had a clean breakfast. Later that day, I said no to soda. After that I avoided picking up fast food on the way home from class. These tiny, insignificant choices that one makes throughout their day completely add up when you are on a weight loss journey. Good choices are constantly made, time goes by, and the next thing you know, it has been a week and you lost 8 pounds.

If you want to lose weight, you can start right now. If you are drinking a sugary soda, toss it. Grab a glass of water. Are you going out for dinner? Order water to drink and order lean protein such as turkey, chicken, or fish and ask the cooks to prepare it with as little butter and salt as possible. Take an hour from your day to dedicate to exercise. Instead of watching TV, playing Candy Crush, or checking out Facebook, devote that time to a good work out. If you want something in life, it is up to you to make it happen. Excuses will not get you anywhere, and finally on that day in 2008, I was ready to give the excuses up.

As your weight loss journey progresses, eating clean and exercising will become a habit. It truly becomes second nature. It has been scientifically shown it takes 21 days to create a habit. And it is true. When you first start clean eating and exercise, it is really hard. I can't take the hard away from it. Nor can anyone else. It is just something you have to push through if you really want it.

Here is when the best part starts to come alive The incredible feelings. The feeling when you are able to be satisfied from food - not miserably full. The feeling of energy that comes from your clean meals. I feel like I am ready to take on the world after I eat healthy. I do not have that "food coma" feeling where I am miserable and want to fall asleep. Aside from proper food choices, you have the accomplishments with working out; be it in the gym, at home, or elsewhere. I pushed through a hard workout and my body is tingling of success (that is one of my personal favorites). Your endorphin's are going crazy. I started off not being able to run a mile, now I can run 5 without stopping. I previously could only do 3 sets of 10 repetitions, 12 pound dumbbell curls, but now I can do 3 sets of 15 - with proper form. I can go harder. I can go faster. I can go longer. I look in the mirror and see myself shrinking. The pants that were too tight a month ago, are now falling off of my waist. I can see my body getting toned. I can flex my arm and see definition starting to appear.  Your hard work comes to a surface. You finally understand and you finally appreciate the hard work you have put in. These are your rewards. And they keep you going. I want to be better than I was yesterday and I can't wait to be better than that tomorrow.

One of the bonuses about losing weight that no one really talks about is how your accomplishments effect the rest of your life. I find that I want to be a better person at my job. I want to be a better friend. I want to set harder goals. I feel so much better about myself and I have learned to love myself more than I thought possible. I proved that I can work hard and stay dedicated to improve my body and health, and I also happen to strength my mind. My confidence. My self worth. Anyone can lose weight and you get started right now. Start by making healthier choices whenever you can. Do not overwhelm yourself, just take it one step at a time. You will not lose all of the weight you want in a day, week, month, or probably even 2 months. It takes time. It takes dedication, consistency, motivation from within, and if you want to start, take initiative and do it right now. Learn anything you can about proper nutrition and exercise, talk to your friends, talk to a trainer, buy books, obtain free material online - there are millions of sources. Once you gain some knowledge, execute it by making one healthy choice at a time.

I'm there with you! On November 25th 2013, I had to almost start over. I am building myself up again from a hard year with a lot of obstacles. And I am doing it, one bite and one calorie at a time.

Clean Eating: (Healthy) Protein Cookies

January 21, 2014

Ladies, we are in this journey together.
Image Map

You know this whole weight loss, I want to be healthy and feel sexy, and wash my clothes on my stomach type of journey.

Thus, on this journey, we need to eat clean. No dieting (I loathe that word) - but healthy, clean eating 85% of the time. And I think as human nature, it's imperative to enjoy what we eat. I know that I for one, always fell off the bandwagon when I detested the food I was eating. I mean how many times can you eat grilled chicken and broccoli?

One of my missions has been to create healthy alternatives to the foods we already love. It takes a lot of time and a lot of trial and error. When I start to create my new recipes, it looks like this:

I purchased "coconut flour" and I was really excited to create all of these fun new recipes. But I am not too confident yet.

First, my protein pancakes. They were delicious Sunday morning when they were hot and fresh. Now, not so much. They are extremely grainy and I think if I put it in front of a starving dog, he would choose to try and consume air instead. I made enough pancakes for my breakfast this week, and it's hard to eat them. I am revamping that recipe. I believe I know what I need to switch up and try.

Second, my zucchini and feta cakes. I have not tried them yet. I was going to have one for lunch yesterday, but I am fighting a cold (...again) and felt awful yesterday so I opted for chicken soup. But I am not positive about them. They were heavier than normal, I don't think they cooked thoroughly, and I am afraid the coconut taste may not be masked enough. I don't think the recipe will be a winner, but there is still a tiny bit of hope.

Third, protein cookies. OK people, finally. We have a winner. These were delicious. I am excited to share the recipe with you all.

What you need:
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12-14 packs Stevia
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 scoop protein powder (I use vanilla)
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk
  • 1/4 cup of PB2 (peanut powder - do not use peanut butter, much higher in fat and calories)
  • Optional: 1/4 dark chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1/2 cup plain walnuts

Directions:
  • Preheat over to 350 degrees
  • Coat cookie sheet thoroughly with nonstick spray
  • All all of the ingredients in a medium to large size mixing bowl - you will not when it is thorughly mixed as the texture will be very creamy and not overly thick
  • Take a spoon and place batter on on cookie sheet - this recipe yields 10 cookies. The cookies were fairly large "circles". I use the word circles in quotations because I am not in the business of food having to look perfect.
  • Bake at 350 from 12-15 minutes.
  • Let cool for however long you want and enjoy.
Super easy. Super delish.

Weekend Recap: Eat. Train. Girlfriends. Devil's Due.

January 19, 2014

Happy Sunday. Is everyone having a great weekend? It is currently a pretty, sunny afternoon in Charlotte and I am exhausted.

This weekend has been busy, but great. Friday was hectic at the office for me. I had meeting after meeting, I kept getting interrupted, and I just had so much to do and no time to finish it all. One good thing that happened; I was having my daily meeting with my President to let him know that the week after next I will have been with the company for 90 days. I can't believe it. Time is going by so fast. I asked him if he wanted to give me a review. Every other department in my company has to have a review, but I do not belong to a department. Even though I meet with him every day in his office since part of my job is being his assistant, I thought a review is still needed. He concurred. He decided to do it over lunch! So he, I, and the "acting" HR Manager and my mentor, Teresa, will be doing it together. I can't wait.

After work, my best friend Kelly and I hit the gym. I was super tired from work but we pushed hard. It was such a good work out - 40 minutes of cardio and an upper body weight circuit.

Talk about some post gym hotness right now. We love our "mean muggin'" face. We decided to indulge and treat ourselves with a bottle of Pinot and our favorite type of pizza. Whenever I want a pizza treat, Palmermo's Spinach, Feta, and Bacon pizza is the only kind I buy! Plus it was on sale at Harris Teeter for $3.00 who could resist.

When Kels left, I rented a movie on demand. I really need to stop doing that, I think I have already rented four this month. My bill is already $80 so this will be great. Anyways, the movie I rented was "Shakespeare in Love". I thought it was awful. I literally watched 20 minutes of it and changed the channel. I should have known better, but it received a lot of awards apparently.

Yesterday morning I was wide eyed and bushy tailed at 8AM. I usually sleep until 10AM if not later on the weekends now. I think my body just gets so tired from dieting, training, and work, so it makes up for it on the weekends. Not this weekend! I went to bed at 1:30 AM and was ready to go at 8 AM. Since I was up early, I decided to make the best of it. I recently purchased coconut flour so I made protein pancakes with it. They were delicious! I also did not realize how high in fiber coconut flour is either. Another amazing benefit!

After breakfast, I did laundry then went to run a couple of errands. I of course had to stop by Ulta. I had a coupon plus huge liters of conditioners were half off. I also needed a new candle. I burn candles so much that I go through them quickly. Additionally, I want to start doing more fun things with my hair. I usually wear it straight or curly. That's it. Last week I did a fun head braid and yesterday I decided to buy a headband. I haven't worn a headband since I was maybe 13!

I bought everything for $26 bucks - with 3X rewards points. Plus a $5.00 coupon for next time. I never buy anything hair, makeup, or skincare related from anywhere else. Ulta rewards loyalty like no other!

After my errands, I hit the gym. I had the best work out EVER. I mean I pushed it to the freaking limit. I did 20 minutes on the Elliptical, 15 minutes of HIIT on the tredmill (inclined walk), 5 sets of squats to fail, then 20 more minutes on the Elliptical, and finally ended with 15 minutes of yoga to stretch my body. I felt like a million bucks after, but my muscle soreness set in shortly after.

I took a shower and got ready, then met my close friend Brooke for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants; Cantina 1511. I rocked my new headband too!

After dinner Brooke and I went to a 10:30 showing of "Devil's Due". I am a horror and paranormal junkie and if there is a new scary movie coming out, I have to be there with bells on. I really liked the movie. It has received really bad reviews from fans and critics. They both say "no" on Fandango, but I truly have to disagree. It was scary... very scary. Perhaps a little too much "devil" for me - I prefer just "ghost" stuff (if that makes sense), but overall I think you should see it once. The only thing I would recommend is a stronger story line. I wanted to know more of the back story as to what was going. But that is one of the reasons why I think there will be more.

I got home around 12:30 from the movie. I was too freaked out to go to bed, so I stooped down a couple of levels and watched "Bad Girl's Club" and went to bed around 2 AM. I woke up early again today, at 9, and decided to knock out all of my food prep and cleaning. They are finally complete, but I have no energy left. I am wiped out. I am relishing my clean apartment. It was bad this week. Marty's hair was everywhere. Ugh!

My post workout snack this week is going to be COOKIES! How amazing, right? I switched up my protein cookie recipe since I now have coconut flour, and the outcome was phenomenal. I might share the recipe. Maybe, maybe not. :)

I definitely planned on working out today, but I'm over it. I can barely walk, my quads are about to pop off of my body, and I just want to rest. I want to do some blog things, read, and relax to prepare for another week. Oh and "The Following" comes back on tonight for season 2. Is anyone else into that show?! It is brilliant! Furthermore the Kardashians, Atlanta Housewives, and Revenge come on tonight as well. I can't wait to be lazy and watch my shows. That is one of my favorite things about Sunday, ha!

Be sure to link up like me on Monday!

TGIF: Back on the grind!

September 6, 2013

Another Friday is upon us. I am most happy to see it, too. This three day work week was brutal. I do not know how I am going to handle a 5! So I definitely need a weekend to prepare myself, right? Can't we just go back to Labor Day weekend? I want my toes in the sand, a fruity drink in my hand, and the ocean. OK anyways, since it's 5 on Friday and H5F5 I am sharing 5 randoms of my short week since coming back from the beach!

(1) Wednesday, reality hit. It was time to go back to work. I definitely through a tantrum too. Ha! But luckily, my laptop was delivered! As you may remember if you read my bloggy blog (you better) Marquis surprised me last week by ordering me one. Mine has been out of comission for well over a year and since I have been writing, I have been using an OLD office laptop that cannot even connect to Wifi. Marq set it up for me and even made my name "Liz Beagle". It made me so happy!

(2) It's back on the bandwagon for healthy eating and my training schedule. And I need it. I need that structure. I am nowhere near perfect and I have definitely been slacking in both departments some. It gets difficult when work is stressful, way too busy, and nonstop. Plus when you're nonstop with everything else as well. But you must push on. I am big Fiber One fan. Their bars, etc. really do have a good amount of fiber in them. Fiber is SO essential and many people do not get enough. Their new lemon brownie flavor is out of this world. It is seriously so delicious! I cannot get enough. Pair one of those babies with an apple or greek yogurt and you are full and good to go. And... um, it will definitely help "clean ya out". There is a coupon for .50 cents off of a box on Coupons.com as well!

(3) August was a stressful month. Literally half of the month by the end of the day, I was in tears. It's very fun working for a small, start-up company sometimes. A lot of times I did not even take a lunch hour. I just had too much to do. I would sit at my desk from 8-5, taking small breaks here and there to blog, look at Twitter or retail websites, and drive right back into work. Well, I don't like that. I need that mental break. What a better way to do it then get in some good cardio at the gym? My gym is right across the street! It's an all around win: my favorite music, my Lateral machine, a mental escape, and burn some fat. I had a great cardio session Thursday, too! Extra cardio on top of my work out's will be fine. It's light cardio, just enough to feel good. I sit at a desk ALL day, my body can handle it.
(4) Since Marquis is in full contest prep again and I want to be better, we have really been cleaning up our meals, especially dinner. We have had the best dinners this week! Plain grilled chicken (it isn't bad either, very juicy and tender) with spinach, almond, and apple salad with sides of sweet potatoes and beans. Last night we had a butternut squash with ground cinnamon, sugar free maple syrup, and a hint of walnuts. What a delicious, organic, and all around nutritious meal. Yum!

(5) Our babies. These are just random pictures I have taken of them since we have been back. They are just too cute and lets face it; who doesn't like pictures of furbabies?

TGIF loves!

Weekend Recap/Weekly Health Plan

June 3, 2013

Pretty mellow weekend my way. I have to say though, the Carolina heat is officially in full effect.

Friday night:
// Work day finally ended at 4:30

// Wine with the girls
Selfie before wine time!

// Gym for weights and cardio
// Grilled "lean turkey dogs" and a Red box night with my man
Getting my grill on!
Broken City: It was OK... I couldn't follow the story line as well as I should have so I think that kind of ruined it for me. Haunted House: It was actually pretty fun, in my opinion! But crude, gross humor... I don't mind that so I laughed a lot.
