New Year. New You. New Start? The Choice is Yours.

January 6, 2015

Upon reading posts on Facebook, browsing pins on Pintrests, and seeing pictures on Instagram, I find that that "new years" often makes people cynical. There are those that mock the "new year, new me" mentality, and then there are people who are desperate for it. I see both sides.

What I believe most about a "new year" is that nothing in your life will change or be different unless you are willing to work for it. Circumstances do not change unless you do.

Here we are six days into 2015. I feel tried. I am worn out from the holidays. Work has been as crazy and hectic as ever; and I find myself stating that constantly. I believe I need to come to the conclusion that is not going to change. Parallel to work, there was copious amounts of travel, lack of sleep, lots of food, and RLS flare-up's.

I think a lot of us feel worn out from the holidays and sad that they are over. Therefore, a "new year" mentality is just the bit of hope to get one back on track and provide a goal to work and hope for. Right now, I need that.

But then I remember that everyday is a new start if you give it that power. No matter how many times you have slipped on your diet, said "no" to a workout, bought that purse when you needed to save the money... everyday is another chance to get it right. Everyday is another chance to try again. Do not focus on that bad choices of yesterday, focus on how you can make positive choices today... right now.

That is what I am going to do. I have let loose, enjoyed myself thoroughly, and now I need to get back to work. Life is all about "finding the balance", and I am glad I enjoyed myself and veered off of my normal tightly structured schedule, as it enabled me to breathe and try new things, which also resulted in me missing my structure! For a while I was bored of it... now I crave it.

This is a new year, and it is bringing an abundance of changes for me-- a big part is sharing my life with someone else now. Which in itself is a fun, new journey, though stressful at times.

Take control and be kind to yourself. A lot of people are in that "after holiday" slump. Ease into a new routine that implement the changes you want to make in your life. Diving in too hard into those changes can result in drowning yourself -- crashing and burning. Changing a little at a time creates consistency and consistency is what forms habits. That is what your new changes need to become -- a habit, something you always find yourself doing. That is how I lost weight. That is how I fell in love with exercising. That is how I changed the way I look at myself. Those positive changes that resulted into new habits are what make it easier for me to reset my mind and fall back into a healthy structure.

So, here we go. From my oily, greasy hair that is carelessly thrown into a bun with my coffee stained pants, I say Happy 2015 and let's make it the best yet.

  3. I like to look at the New Year as a fresh start, a blank chapter in the book of life. I like to use it as the time to let go of the mistakes I might have made on my goals the year before and have a fresh eye on the prize. I don't really believe in the whole resolution thing, I prefer seasonal goals that are attainable over saying I want to do something vaguely.

I wish for you a healthy and happy 2015!!!!

  4. Great post. i really hate the cynics that make Resolutions a bad word. It's just wrong. Sure, many of us won't get past January with our goals, but the fact that we take the time to set them says something, in my opinion.

  5. Good advise! I kinda felt like this when thinking about all my new years resolutions so I decided to focus on one thing: Simplifying my life. It's made it easier and more manageable for me (so far, lol).

  6. This is wonderful! I found the same about the holidays, I enjoyed cutting loose a little and letting myself indulge, both because it was fun and because like you, it made me miss my routine! I love the fresh start of feeling of a new year, full of possibilities! Happy 2015 to you! :)

  7. Hey Liz!!! Do you have any suggestions on how to lose some fat/inches off of my belly and hips? I've been doing CrossFit for almost 8 months now (I love it!), and have drastically changed my eating habits. I try to limit my carb intake (I still eat them because I know my body needs carbs; but just not as much lol), and I eat a lot of veggies and fruit. I've also been trying to incorporate more cardio (running and stairs) into my workout. Like, if I don't go to CrossFit one day, I'll just do cardio. Or if I feel like my workout wasn't as intense, I will do extra cardio. So far, I have only lost between 23-25 pounds (depending on the day) in these past 8 months. Which is good and I'm definitely happy about, but I'm not satisfied. I want to lose more weight, or at least drop more inches/pant sizes. I've only officially dropped one pant size. I guess I just feel frustrated with the process at this point. I see so many of my friends and read about other people who have lost like 40-50+ pounds in the amount of time that it has only taken me to drop 25ish pounds. I'm running out of ideas on how to speed up the process. I'm not going to quit working out and eating healthy, because I do FEEL the difference. I just want to SEE it more. I feel like I'm doing all of the 'right' things...weights, cardio, healthy food, allowing myself to have a cheat meal or day...but it just doesn't seem to be 'good enough'. Any suggestions???

  8. I think the New Year is a new start but so is each day. Hope this year brings you so much happiness. Sometimes we need to veer from the strict schedules we keep to just enjoy life and miss the fitness life.

  9. Great blog! I agree with your post. Having a "resolution" is not a bad thing... because who ever said goals and ambitions were negative aspects to your life?! Happy New Year to you!

  11. I feel you. I came back to work and a sh!t storm, and then a wake last night, and now the dog needs the vet, and my fiance just bought a truck. 6 days in and I'm running on less sleep than ever and super stressed without a moments break in sight. Doesn't it make you wonder what the rest of the year has in store?

  12. Welcome back! I enjoy reading your blog and am glad your back! This is a great post. I think pointing out the need to "be kind to yourself" is so important. It can be easy to beat yourself up when you don't meet a goal by a deadline. We need to be able to forgive ourselves...we are human like everyone else.
